Achilles Tendinosis

What is Achilles tendinosis?

Achilles tendinosis is a painful condition cause by small tears, degeneration and inflammation within the Achilles tendon.

What causes Achilles tendinosis?

Achilles tendinosis is the result of excessive, repetitive stress being placed across the Achilles tendon. This is often the result of participation in sports and exercise, or from constant tension on the tendon during work-related activities.

What are the symptoms of Achilles tendinosis?

Symptoms of Achilles tendinosis tend to gradually occur. These include pain in the back of the heel, swelling, pain with walking, and stiffness.

How is Achilles tendinosis diagnosed?

Achilles tendinosis is diagnosed with medical history, thorough physical examination and imaging studies. X-rays will be ordered to evaluate for any bony abnormalities such as a bone spur or calcification of the Achilles tendon. An MRI is often ordered to better assess the state of the Achilles tendon.

How is Achilles tendinosis treated?

Nonsurgical

Achilles tendinosis is painful, but generally short-lived. It can be treated successfully with conservative measures. Rest, anti-inflammatory pain medications, immobilization in a walking boot, ice to decrease swelling, and activity restrictions are often prescribed. Physical therapy is used for strengthening, stretching and walking rehabilitation.

Surgical

In more severe cases, surgery is indicated to remove the inflamed tissue from the Achilles tendon.
